Preserving New Orleans' Historic Homes: Revival Grants by the Preservation Resource Center – June 2025 Update

New Orleans' rich architectural heritage is a testament to its vibrant history and culture. However, maintaining these historic structures, especially for low- to moderate-income homeowners, can be challenging. The Preservation Resource Center (PRC) of New Orleans addresses this need through its Revival Grants program, offering financial assistance for exterior repairs to qualifying homeowners.

What Are Revival Grants?

The Revival Grants program provides up to $20,000 to eligible homeowners for minor exterior repairs, particularly those cited for violations by the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC). Eligible repairs include replacing inappropriate materials used for doors, windows, shutters, and fences, as well as repairing or replacing damaged gutters, siding, and trim work.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for the Revival Grants program, homeowners must:

  • Reside in a New Orleans HDLC district that levies fines.

  • Own and occupy only one property.

  • Have been cited for violations by the HDLC.

  • Meet low-to-moderate-income household requirements as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

How to Apply

Interested homeowners can apply by completing an online application or contacting the PRC directly at (504) 581-7032. The PRC evaluates applicants based on need and the scope of work required. contempoproperties.net+1prcno.org+1

Program Expansion and Impact

In June 2025, the PRC expanded the Revival Grants program to include full-control historic districts across the city, such as Algiers Point, Bywater, Carrollton Avenue, Esplanade Ridge, Faubourg Marigny, Garden District, Holy Cross, Irish Channel, Lower Garden District, Lafayette Square, Picayune Place, St. Charles Avenue, and Tremé.

The program has positively impacted residents like Denise Tate, a school bus driver in the Bywater neighborhood. With assistance from the PRC, she addressed HDLC violations on her double shotgun house, including replacing inappropriate windows and doors and rebuilding front steps.

Funding and Support

The Revival Grants program is funded by various organizations, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation's African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, the Richard and Julia Moe Family Fund, the City of New Orleans, the 1772 Foundation, Hancock Whitney Bank, Regions Bank, and other private donors.

Conclusion

The Revival Grants program plays a crucial role in preserving New Orleans' historic architecture and supporting homeowners in maintaining their properties. By providing financial assistance for necessary repairs, the PRC ensures that the city's unique architectural heritage remains intact for future generations.prcno.org+3contempoproperties.net+3prcno.org+3
