Get Ready for the Healthy Homes Program – May 1, 2025, Deadline for 1–4 Unit Rentals in NOLA

New Orleans landlords and property managers—are your rental units ready? The Healthy Homes Program is rolling out a crucial update with a deadline of May 1, 2025. This applies specifically to 1–4 unit rental properties in New Orleans. If you own or manage small rental units, this is your time to take action.

What is the Healthy Homes Program?

The Healthy Homes Program is part of the City of New Orleans’ commitment to ensuring all rental housing meets minimum health and safety standards. The program is designed to improve housing quality, promote tenant well-being, and reduce code violations across the city.

Who Needs to Comply by May 1, 2025

All landlords or property managers of 1–4 unit rental properties in New Orleans are required to:

  • Register their rental units with the city

  • Schedule and pass inspections

  • Ensure properties meet key health and safety standards, including:

    • Proper ventilation

    • Working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

    • Mold and pest-free conditions

    • Safe electrical and plumbing systems

How to Prepare

  1. Inspect your units now – Identify and fix any issues before the official inspection.

  2. Register with the city – Ensure your rental license and registration are up-to-date.

  3. Stay informed – Attend city webinars, workshops, or info sessions about the program.

Why It Matters

Non-compliance can result in fines, penalties, and rental restrictions. But beyond that, providing a safe and healthy living space supports long-term tenant retention and community trust.
