New Orleans is renowned for its rich history and distinctive architecture. To help preserve this heritage, the Preservation Resource Center (PRC), in collaboration with the City of New Orleans, has introduced the Historic Home Repair Grant Program. This initiative aims to assist low-to-moderate-income homeowners in maintaining and restoring the exteriors of their historic residences.
Program Overview
The Historic Home Repair Grant Program offers eligible homeowners grants of up to $20,000 for minor exterior repairs. These repairs are essential not only for the upkeep of individual properties but also for the preservation of the city's architectural legacy. Examples of eligible repairs include:
Repairing or replacing damaged gutters, siding, and trim
Repairing or replacing roofs
Repairing or replacing damaged or inappropriate doors, windows, or shutters
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the program, homeowners must meet the following requirements:
Residency: Must reside in Orleans Parish.
Ownership: Must be the homeowner and own only one property.
Property Age: The home must be 50 years old or older.
Income: Must be a low- to moderate-income household as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This means the total household income cannot exceed the current 80% Area Median Income (AMI) limit, which varies based on family size. For example, the limit is $48,650 for a family of one and increases incrementally with each additional family member.
Application Process
Interested homeowners who meet the eligibility criteria can apply through the following steps:prcno.org
Contact PRC: Call (504) 581-7032 or complete the online application available on the PRC's website.
Evaluation: After submission, PRC will assess eligibility and schedule a home evaluation to determine the scope of work
Program Impact
This initiative not only aids homeowners in maintaining their properties but also plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural and architectural identity of New Orleans. By supporting necessary repairs, the program ensures that historic homes remain safe, functional, and true to their original character.
