The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) has launched the Lead Line Replacement Program to comply with updated federal regulations regarding lead in drinking water. The program aims to replace all lead service lines, both on public utility-owned property and private customer-owned property.
For those unfamiliar, a service line is the piping section connecting the water main to your home or business. Given New Orleans' size and age, replacing these lead lines is a significant challenge. Over the years, SWBNO has made strides in reducing the number of lead service lines on the utility-owned side of the water system. However, eliminating all lead service lines throughout the city will require a comprehensive plan and many years of effort.
In the meantime, for those concerned about lead in their drinking water, SWBNO has introduced a program that allows customers to request a water filter pitcher. These pitchers come with a filter designed to remove lead and last for six months.
